TOEFL Speaking

TOEFL Speaking Practice — 2026 Format

The updated TOEFL Speaking section has two task types: Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.

In Listen and Repeat, you hear a sentence and repeat it immediately as accurately and clearly as possible.

In Take an Interview, you answer questions about experiences, preferences and opinions. You have 45 seconds for each answer and no preparation time. Recording begins after the question finishes.

Strong responses answer the question directly, stay relevant, and support ideas with useful details or reasons.

Listen and Repeat sample

A real task from a free YourTOEFLPrep practice test. Listen carefully and repeat the sentence you hear.

Scene for the Listen and Repeat task

You are helping new international students travel from the train station to campus. Listen to your supervisor and repeat what you hear. Repeat only once.

1

Listen first — the sentence appears after playback.

2

Listen first — the sentence appears after playback.

3

Listen first — the sentence appears after playback.

Try to:

  • include all important words
  • keep the original meaning
  • speak clearly
  • avoid unnecessary grammar or word-form changes

Take an Interview sample

A real interview task from a free practice test. Watch each question, just like in the real test.

You have volunteered for a brief research interview about travel. The researcher will ask two questions about places you would like to visit and how you prefer to travel.

Question 1

Think about a place you would really like to visit. Where would it be?

Question 2

People choose very different ways to travel. Some prefer the train, where they can read, move around and watch the view go past, while others prefer a car for the freedom to stop wherever they like. Which do you prefer, and why?

You have 45 seconds to answer each question. There is no preparation time.

A strong response should:

  • answer directly
  • stay relevant
  • explain the main idea
  • add useful reasons or details
  • use clear English
